About the Campaign
We call on our elected officials to end all government handouts to oil, gas and coal companies and reject campaign contributions from these Dirty Energy industries.
America’s climate and energy policies are currently dictated by the oil, coal and gas industries who are determined to keep our country addicted to their dirty fuels. From attacks on the Clean Air Act, to the promotion of the Keystone pipeline and gas fracking, to the funding of thinks tanks which deny the existence of man-made climate change, the fossil fuel industry is pushing its advantage on all fronts. To add insult to injury, these industries continue to receive billions in government handouts every year in the form of subsidies and tax breaks, despite the fact that they are among the most profitable companies in human history and in the face of budget cuts to essential services for the poor and middle class. Legal bribery -- in the form of campaign contributions to members of Congress -- makes much of this possible.
It does not have to be this way. Launched in the Spring of 2011, the Dirty Energy Money Campaign was created in order to confront and reduce the political influence of the fossil fuel industry. We aim to eliminate government handouts to the oil, coal and gas industries and pressure our elected officials to stop taking campaign contributions from these Dirty Energy Industries. Ultimately we intend to make contributions from oil, gas and coal as toxic to elected officials as tobacco money is now. As a result of this effort, we will weaken the ability of the fossil fuel industry to shape the public debate and open up political space for real solutions for clean energy, public health, community rights and climate protection.
The Dirty Energy Money Campaign is a project of Oil Change International, which campaigns to expose the true costs of fossil fuels and facilitate the coming transition towards clean energy.
